Flood sweeps away students

7th-05-2012

POKHARA: It couldn’t have come in a more fearsome manner to 16 students – nine boys and seven girls – of the La Grandee International College of Pokhara who went for picnic in Kharapani of Sardikhola yesterday.

After reaching the spot, the group led by Archana Shrestha of Pokhara went to the Seti banks in search of firewood. But the sudden flash flood in the river swept away Archana and her friend Chet Bahadur Thapa, while 14 others somehow managed to flee the spot.

Archana’s dead body was found in the evening while her friend Chet is yet to be found. With her death, the whole Bagale Tole was draped in sorrow. “She was the pride of our village, but now we mourn her death,” said a neighbour Bishnu Shreshtha.

According to the college principal Dev Raj Chalise, Archana was a bright student. Archana’s mother Nira and father Dilip are yet to come to terms of the untimely death of their 19-year old daughter, whose dead body was cremated on Saturday evening.

Earlier following the incident, the frantic parents of Archana had reached Sardi-khola to search but they could not find her. However, the parents lost their consciousness after getting the dead body of the daughter at about 5 in the evening.

Meanwhile, Chet Bahadur Thapa (21) of Kristi Nachnechaur of Kaski who had gone missing along with Archana is yet to be found. He is an orphan from the SOS Balgram. Rishi Baral;
