MAHENDRANAGAR: The far-west region, which has been crippled by bandhs and strikes by several pressure groups, has earned a dubious honour of seeing the longest ever shutdown in history.
The far-west has been reeling under strikes for the last one month. No matter what the demands of different groups are, the general public has been bearing the brunt of the bandhs organised by different groups over the fate of far-west region when federal units are carved out.
Life in Kailali and Kanchanpur and other seven hill districts of the far-west region has been paralysed for over a month.
The bandhs started a month ago when the Unified CPN-Maoist floated a 10-pradhes model which proposed to separate Kailali and Kanchanpur to form a separate Tharu state. A group was formed to pressure parties for keeping far-west undivided, and it enforced a general strike from April 27.
Later, the Tharu Joint Struggle Committee enforced bandh demanding that Kailali and Kanchanpur be made a separate Tharuhat state.
While vehicles have stayed off roads, hospitals have run out of stock of drugs, oxygen and other essentials. The general public is at the receiving end with shortage of daily essentials in the market. Industries, factories, educational institutions have remained shut.
Imports through the customs at Gaddachowki of Kanchanpur and Trinagar Kailali have stopped, resulting in huge loss to the state.HImal..
