Strong winds spread the fire swiftly that started from the house of local Nathuni Yadav at Aurahi. According to the former VDC chairman Subran Yadav of Aurahi VDC, the blaze gutted over 3,000 and left more than 5,000 people homeless.
Preliminary investigation shows that property worth over Rs 40 crore was destroyed in the incident, according to DSP Krishnahari Sharma.
Sharma said the fire was jointly extinguished by the Nepal Police, Armed Police Force and Nepali Army with support from the local people. Fire ambulances from Lahan Municipality and Rajbiraj Municipality were used into service to control the fire.
Rajdev Yadav, president of the Nepal Red Cross Society Siraha, who was involved in rescue operation, said that the massive fire reduced all the houses of Aurahi VDC to ashes. “This may be Nepal’s biggest fire incident,” Yadav added.
Local residents are left in the lurch after the fire incident. Suvash Yadav of Aurahi said that the blaze had gutted clothes, grains, and other belongings. Meanwhile, the Home Ministry has issued a directive to the District Administration Officer to provide rescue and relief operation. Rambabu Yadav
