As the parties are in the final stage of give-and-take on contentious issues of the new constitution, the UCPN (Maoist) has called an emergency meeting of its Central Committee on Monday to make public its fresh position on state restructuring and forms of governance.
Party Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal Dahal is expected to brief CC members about the ongoing negotiations with other parties on the two burning issues. Maoist party has officially rooted for 14 provinces on the basis of ethnic identity and directly elected president.
During the negotiations with other parties Dahal has proposed 10 provinces and mixed model on the forms of governance in a compromise. “Tomorrow's meet is an emergency meeting that will discuss forms of governance and state restructuring,” said Maoist Politburo member Agni Sapkota.
According to leaders, Dahal will endorse his proposal of 10 provinces and mixed system on forms of governance from the Central Committee. Dahal is publicly saying that the parties will forge consensus on 8 to 10 states and mixed system.
Meanwhile, the three major parties and Samyukta Loktantrik Madhesi Morcha (SLMM) have failed to narrow down disputes related to the statute drafting within the three-day deadline they had committed last week. The deadline to reach a common ground on state restructuring and federalism as committed in Thursday's five-point deal expired on Sunday. Top leaders had committed to go for majority votes in the CA for settling disputed issues should they fail to reach an agreement.
Considering the decision, Friday's CA session was put off till Tuesday to make it easier for the leaders and Constitutional Committee. ekantipur;
